Undermount kitchen sinks have one distinct advantage over rimmed or drop-in sinks: zero rim exposure. Of course every sink has a rim, but undermount sinks hang from the underside of the countertop and so do not have a raised lip or rim that rests on top of the counter.
At one time, drop-in sinks were the only game in town. Even after undermount sinks hit the residential consumer market, they remained exotic and premium for a number of years—more difficult to install and more costly to purchase. Now that professionals are just as comfortable installing undermounts as they are drop-ins, and prices of undermount sinks are more competitive, the choice is that much harder.
Stainless steels need to be cleaned for aesthetic considerations and to preserve corrosion resistance. Some form of routine cleaning is necessary to preserve the appearance and integrity of the surface. Stainless steel sinks are easily cleaned by many different methods. They actually thrive with frequent cleaning, and, unlike some other materials, it is impossible to “wear out” stainless steel sinks by excessive cleaning.
